NID 2025 Part B Question 5
Read the passage below and answer the questions:
Philosopher: "You see, happiness is not something that depends on others, but rather, it is a result of how you choose to live. In life, we often find ourselves shackled by the expectations and judgments of others. But the truth is, these judgments are just that-judgments. They are not truths about who you are or what you should do. The only real judgment that matters is the one you pass on yourself."
Young Man: "But how can we not care about the opinions of others? Don't we live in a society where we must seek approval from others to succeed or even be liked?"
Philosopher: "That's the misconception. We think that in order to be loved or accepted, we must conform to what others expect of us. But in reality, this is a prison of our own making. The courage to be disliked is the courage to break free from this prison. It means having the strength to be yourself, even when others may not approve. And it is in this freedom, this authenticity, that true happiness lies."
Young Man: "But if I'm not trying to please others, doesn't that mean I will be alone? If I'm disliked, how can I feel happiness?"
Philosopher: "It's not about being disliked or liked; it's about living in a way that is true to your own values. When you start to live for yourself, and not for the approval of others, you are no longer bound by the fear of rejection. You become free, and freedom is the foundation of happiness. Those who truly love you will love you for who you are, not for who you pretend to be."
