The NIFT entrance exam is conducted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in design and fashion technology. NIFT is India's premier fashion and design institution, with 18 campuses across the country.

B.Des, B.FTech, M.Des, M.FTech, and MFM (Master of Fashion Management) programmes all require the NIFT entrance examination. Each programme has a different test component requirement.

Design programmes (B.Des, M.Des) require both a Creative Ability Test (CAT) and a General Ability Test (GAT). Technology programmes (B.FTech, M.FTech) require only the GAT. The MFM programme requires the GAT and a Case Study. Shortlisted candidates are also called for a Situation Test and/or interview.

The CAT is a studio-based test that assesses creative thinking, aesthetic sensibility, and design communication skills. It involves drawing, composition, and visual problem-solving tasks. The CAT is conducted offline and evaluated based on originality, execution, and the candidate's ability to communicate ideas visually.

The GAT is an objective computer-based test assessing Quantitative Ability, Communication Ability, English Comprehension, Analytical Ability, General Knowledge, and Case Study Analysis. It is common across all NIFT programmes and is conducted before the CAT.

Yes, there is negative marking in the GAT section of the NIFT entrance exam. One-fourth of the marks is deducted for each incorrect answer in the objective section. The CAT has no negative marking as it is a studio-based subjective test.

NIFT currently has 18 primary campuses across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Patna, Raebareli, Bhopal, Shillong, Srinagar, Panchkula, and Daman.

NIFT New Delhi is widely considered the flagship campus with the strongest industry connections, faculty, and alumni network. NIFT Mumbai and NIFT Bengaluru are also highly regarded. For fashion design, Delhi is the most sought-after campus due to its proximity to India's fashion industry hub.

Yes, NIFT is a statutory body established under the National Institute of Fashion Technology Act, 2006. It is funded by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, making it a government-funded institution with standardised fee structures across campuses.

Yes, students from all streams — Science, Commerce, and Arts & Humanities — are eligible for NIFT undergraduate programmes. There is no stream restriction. The only requirement is passing Class 12 from a recognised board. Design aptitude and creative ability matter far more than academic stream.

The Situation Test is a second-stage studio test conducted for shortlisted B.Des candidates. Candidates are given a set of materials and asked to create a 3D model or composition based on a given concept or situation. It assesses material handling, creativity, and problem-solving under time pressure.

NIFT offers approximately 5,200+ seats across all campuses and programmes combined, making it significantly larger than NID or IIT B.Des programmes. The Delhi campus alone offers around 500+ seats across all programmes.

NIFT focuses specifically on fashion design, fashion technology, and textile-related disciplines. NID is a broader design institution covering product design, communication design, animation, and more. NID has a stronger emphasis on craft and traditional Indian design. NIFT has stronger ties to the fashion and apparel industry.
