Frequently Asked Questions
What is the UCEED exam?
UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design) is a national-level test conducted annually by IIT Bombay. It is the primary gateway for admission to Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programs at premier institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Roorkee, IIITDM Jabalpur, and IIT Indore.
Who is eligible for UCEED?
Candidates from all streams — Science, Commerce, and Arts & Humanities — are eligible for UCEED. You must have passed or be appearing for your Class 12 board exams in the current or previous year. There is no minimum board percentage required to appear for the test.
What is the UCEED paper structure?
The 3-hour exam totals 300 marks and is split into two mandatory parts. Part A is a 2-hour computer-based test (NAT, MSQ, MCQ) evaluating spatial reasoning, logic, and observation. Part B is a 1-hour offline drawing and design aptitude test evaluating perspective and problem-solving.
Does UCEED have negative marking?
Part A has negative marking for MCQs and MSQs. MCQ questions carry a penalty of 0.71 marks for a wrong answer. MSQ questions carry a penalty of 1 mark for a wrong answer, but give partial marks when some correct options are selected. NAT questions have no negative marking.
How is UCEED Part A scored?
Part A is scored out of 200 marks. NAT questions are worth 4 marks each with no negative marking. MSQ questions are worth 4 marks each with partial marking and a 1-mark penalty for wrong answers. MCQ questions are worth 3 marks each with a 0.71-mark penalty for wrong answers. Part B is scored separately out of 100 marks.
Is Math compulsory for the UCEED exam?
No, Mathematics is not compulsory in your 12th-grade boards to be eligible to write UCEED. However, B.Des admissions at IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee specifically require Science with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Additionally, the Part A syllabus includes 10th-standard math for the Numerical Answer Type (NAT) section.
Is drawing required to crack UCEED?
Yes, drawing is required for Part B of the exam. While Part A is a purely computer-based aptitude test, Part B requires physical sketching. Examiners evaluate your understanding of perspective, proportion, and problem-solving through design — not fine art skill or hyper-realistic shading.
How many attempts are allowed for UCEED?
A candidate is allowed a maximum of two attempts for UCEED, and these attempts must be in consecutive years. Your UCEED score is valid for only one year and can only be used for admissions in the corresponding academic year.
What topics are covered in UCEED Part A?
Part A covers Visualisation and Spatial Ability, Observation and Design Sensitivity, Environmental and Social Awareness, Analytical and Logical Reasoning, Language and Creativity, and Design Thinking and Problem Solving. Spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, and observation questions make up the bulk of the paper.
Can I use a calculator in UCEED?
No, calculators are not permitted in the UCEED exam. The NAT questions are designed so that calculations can be done mentally or on rough paper within the time limit. The focus is on setting up the problem correctly, not on complex arithmetic.
What is the difference between UCEED and NID DAT?
UCEED is conducted by IIT Bombay and leads to B.Des admission at IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur. NID DAT is conducted by NID Ahmedabad and leads to B.Des admission at NID campuses. Both test design aptitude but have different question styles — UCEED is more heavily weighted toward spatial and analytical reasoning, while NID DAT emphasises observation and Indian craft knowledge.
How many B.Des seats are available through UCEED?
The total number of B.Des seats available through UCEED across all participating institutes is 245 seats, making it one of the most competitive design entrances in India. IIT Bombay alone offers 37 seats.
When is UCEED conducted every year?
UCEED is typically conducted in January each year. Applications open around October–November of the preceding year. The exact dates are announced by IIT Bombay on the official UCEED website.
Can I clear UCEED without coaching?
Yes, you can clear UCEED without coaching. The exam tests innate spatial reasoning, logic, and observation skills rather than memorised textbook theories. The most effective self-study strategy is solving official past year papers and timing your attempts to build speed and accuracy.
Is UCEED only for IIT?
No, UCEED is not only for IITs. While IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Indore are the primary participating institutes, IIITDM Jabalpur also admits students through UCEED scores. Over 20 private result-sharing design institutes additionally accept UCEED scores for their B.Des admissions.
Which colleges accept UCEED scores other than IITs?
IIITDM Jabalpur is the primary non-IIT participating institute that accepts UCEED scores for B.Des admission. Additionally, over 20 private result-sharing institutes (like CEPT, BITS Design School, and RV University) use UCEED scores. The full list is published annually on the official UCEED website.
Is UCEED harder than JEE?
UCEED and JEE test completely different skills, so they cannot be directly compared in difficulty. JEE tests deep knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. UCEED tests visual intelligence, spatial reasoning, observation, and design aptitude. Most JEE students find UCEED unfamiliar rather than difficult — the skills required are simply different. Students with strong visual and spatial instincts often find UCEED more natural than JEE.
Is it difficult to crack UCEED?
UCEED is highly competitive. Roughly 14,000–15,000 candidates appear for 245 seats across all participating institutes. The exam is not conceptually difficult, but it demands strong visual and spatial reasoning developed through consistent practice. Students who work through 3–4 years of past papers with timed attempts are well-positioned to clear it.
What is the UCEED paper pattern?
UCEED consists of two parts. Part A is a 2-hour computer-based objective test worth 200 marks, divided into three sections: Section 1 (NAT), Section 2 (MSQ), and Section 3 (MCQ). Part B is a 1-hour offline drawing and design test worth 100 marks. Both parts are mandatory. The total exam is worth 300 marks.
What is the total marks in UCEED?
The total marks in UCEED is 300. Part A (computer-based objective test) is worth 200 marks and Part B (offline drawing test) is worth 100 marks. The final merit rank is calculated based on the combined Part A and Part B scores, with Part A acting as a qualifying filter first.
What is the UCEED marking scheme?
In Part A: NAT questions carry 4 marks with no negative marking. MSQ questions carry 4 marks with a penalty of 1 mark for a wrong answer, and partial marks are awarded. MCQ questions carry 3 marks with a penalty of 0.71 marks for a wrong answer. Part B is evaluated offline by design faculty and is worth 100 marks.
What are the job opportunities after UCEED?
IIT B.Des graduates work across product design, UX and interaction design, graphic design, design strategy, design consulting, and design entrepreneurship. Top recruiters from IIT design programmes include Google, Microsoft, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, PhonePe, Titan, and leading design consultancies. The combination of design education and the IIT brand opens doors both in India and internationally.
Which is better, UCEED or NIFT?
UCEED and NIFT serve different career paths and cannot be ranked against each other. UCEED leads to a B.Des at IITs, which emphasises design thinking, technology, and systems — ideal for product design, UX, and industrial design careers. NIFT focuses on fashion design, textile design, and the apparel industry. If your goal is fashion or textile, NIFT is the better fit. If your goal is product, digital, or industrial design, UCEED and the IIT B.Des programmes are the stronger choice.
Does UCEED have drawing questions?
Yes. Part B of UCEED is an offline drawing test worth 100 marks. It tests your ability to communicate design ideas visually — perspective sketching, product ideation, and visual problem-solving. Roughworks covers Part A objective questions only. For Part B preparation, practise perspective drawing regularly and study topper drawings and examiner feedback published on the official UCEED website after each exam.
